508 Compliance Remediation Specialist

Department: Information Technology
Location: Kansas City, MO

Job Summary: A 508-compliance remediation specialist assists both internal and external customers by reviewing customer’s documents, websites or applications to meet Section 508 standards and then remediating discovered issues with the customer.

Essential Functions:

  • Serves as a primary source of expertise concerning Section 508 accessibility and helps client meet Section 508 standards.
  • Remediation of various document types (Ex: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF & Websites) and works with client on changes
  • Uses the DHS checklist of accessibility tests to determine if all features are accessible or not.
  • Record problems/defects identified during testing and retest problems after they are resolved by developers.
  • Meeting with clients’ staff to educate on documented findings.
  • Recommends Section 508 improvements related to service offerings, processes, and artifacts where possible.
  • Stays current on Section 508 policy, federal agency accessibility checklists and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably computer sciences, web development/design, graphic design, or knowledge acquired through extensive work-related experience. Equivalent work experience may replace preferred degree completion.
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Have knowledge of tools used for secondary compliance testing, such as JAWS. Adobe, Common look, ARCT reports & MS Office products.
  • Must be able to write test summaries and test analysis summaries.
  • Excellent attendance record
  • Detail oriented with specific emphasis on listening skills
  • Excellent critical thinking skills
  • Ability to take direction and receive coaching
  • Ability to learn and understand new industry terminology quickly and place it in context appropriately
  • Strong proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office and/or standard software applications typically used in a corporate office environment
  • Must possess or complete 508 compliance training / certification
  • Must possess or complete JAWS certification

Working Conditions:

  • Sitting and working at a desk/cubicle for 4–8-hour shifts
  • Working at a computer for 4–8-hour shifts
  • Wearing a headset as needed for client or team meetings
  • Possible work from home position
