Assistant Supervisor-Military Sewing

Department: ACS - Sewing
Location: Richmond Hill, NY

Alphapointe is looking for an experienced Assistant Supervisor for our Military Sewing Department.  The department makes apparel, tourniquets and other items for the US military.  Please read job description below.

Job Summary: Learn and be able to demonstrate understanding of (1) all company and departmental production management policies, procedures, and supervisory techniques; (2) product specifications and ISO 9001:2015 quality control requirements; (3) material handling policies and procedures; (4) Human Resources and other reporting policies and procedures; (5) training, evaluating, and motivating, all sighted, visually impaired, direct and indirect labor employees.



Essential Functions:

  • Comply with company Personnel, Safety, Manufacturing, Material Handling and ISO 9001:2015 quality control policies and procedures. Make recommendations for changes and implement as appropriate.
  • Thoroughly understand all product, packaging, quality and labeling requirements of all items in the department.
  • Thoroughly understand government-military requirements and specifications on all projects including material, production, inspection and delivery.
  • Maintain “commitment to quality” following ISO 9001:2015 process for quality control/inspection at every station as the most important priority for everyone in the department.
  • Assure that sufficient quantities of all needed raw material components are available to meet production requirements. Request approvals for materials and supplies as needed in a timely manner and assure that they are secured in order to keep production on schedule.
  • Assure that all production orders are completed accurately and on time. Keep Supervisor updated daily of any concerns that could impact on time deliveries.
  • Recommend for hire, help, train, evaluate, promote and/or recommend for termination all blind and sighted direct and indirect employees.
  • Monitor productivity of all employees in department. Understand their strengths and weaknesses. Assure that they are properly trained and have needed safety and ergonomic equipment. Make recommendations for change and implement as directed.
  • Submit written performance evaluations as requested, accurately and on time.
  • Work closely with the Supervisor, Director of Rehabilitation Services, Production Manager, Director of Operations, to assure that every visually impaired employee has whatever appropriate low vision devices, jigs and other production and/or mobility accommodations to assure maximum productivity.
  • Request maintenance and/or repairs for machines needed. Work with Mechanics and/or Industrial Engineering as appropriate. Notify Supervisor of any problems that will affect ability to meet production schedules or have significant budget implications.
  • Assure overall safety and cleanliness of all production and storage areas.
  • Assure accurate and timely submission of all required reports to Supervisor as directed.
  • Maintain good communications with all levels of staff.
  • Perform all other activities as requested by Supervisor.

Additional Functions:

  • Ability to perform Paycor duties when required
  • Ability to know how to use Macola
  • Assist with personnel and disciplinary issues as needed on production floor
  • Fill in for the Department Supervisor as needed
  • Perform additional floor supervision, machine operation, assembly, or

Ware housing projects as assigned

  • Perform monthly inventories
  • Other duties as assigned



Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • HS diploma
  • Good interpersonal communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Minimum partial sight required
  • Must be able to read government specifications
  • Good math skills,
  • 1 year in a supervisory position 

Working Conditions:

  • Overtime may be required
  • Standing / Walking up to 75% of day
