Part Time Grant Writer and Development Assistant

Location: Richmond Hill, NY

As part of its mission, Alphapointe provides preferential hiring to people with vision impairments (legally blind).

Entrepreneurial non-profit located in Queens employing people who are blind and visually impaired. This position will work with the VP of Development and Services and other members of the development team to meet fundraising goals. The fundraising goal for the Grant Writer is reviewed and established annually. Required skills include effective writing, broad-level research, strategic and creative messaging, donor cultivation, and the ability to maintain a tracking and response system to ensure grant compliance, reporting, and follow-through. This position reports to the VP of Development and Services.

The Grant Writer and Fund Development Assistant serves as a key member of development team and is central to the facilitation of a robust fundraising operation in NY location. She/he works closely with the team to track key funding requirements and metrics, produce effective written fundraising materials, and support the core operations and management of the departmentís fundraising efforts.

An ideal candidate for this role will bring a strong background in grant writing, grants management, relationship management, prospect research and a proven record of successful grant tracking and reporting. This position requires exceptional attention to detail, a high degree of technological proficiency, familiarity with budgets and financial reporting, and the ability to rapidly adapt to new systems and information. A flexible and a collaborative approach is key to success.

Essential Functions:

Grants Management

  • Manage all grant reporting and submission requirements and ensure all materials are prepared, reviewed and submitted on schedule.
  • Maintain a reporting calendar and prepare and manage a proposal development schedule from pre/post RFP/LOI to submission.
  • Provide regular reports to VP of Development on key milestones, deadlines and requirements.
  • Participate in development team meetings to review progress towards meeting the organizationís annual development plan, review grants calendar, and develop strategy for new funding sources;

Fundraising Writing

  • Prepare introductions, letters of intent, grant requests/proposals, grant reports, sponsorship package copy, individual donor appeals, and similar fundraising materials as required.
  • Interpret funding institution guidelines and requirements as well as review proposals for compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Understand and effectively communicate the goals, mission and vision of the organization and related Campaigns.
  • Able to successfully and creatively discuss in person and on paper various fundraising approaches.

Prospect Research

  • Identify applicable funding opportunities (foundation, corporation and individual donor) and maintain a process of development, usage, and application.
  • Demonstrate a proven working ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse funding base.

Database Support

  • Support data entry and management of fundraising pipelines and revenue tracking.
  • Assist in management and execution of all administrative donation processes.

Other Duties:

  • Be an active and engaged member of the Development team by offering inputs and ideas, participating in discussions on Development strategy and management, and helping peers to be successful in their roles.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the VP of Development & Services

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelorís degree in English, Journalism, Non-Profit Management, Public Relations or other course of study that requires strong writing ability.
  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in positions with direct applicability to the roles and responsibilities outlined for this position: Grant writing, donor database experience and demonstrated success in non-profit fundraising and grants management is required.
  • A high degree of technological proficiency; advanced proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required.
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail; proven ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to engage and effectively communicate with a broad range of individuals.
  • Ability to work calmly and quickly in a fast-paced, rigorous and entrepreneurial environment
  • Adaptable, curious and articulate.
  • Ability to maintain an optimistic and positive working attitude and work independently.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of people with disabilities, diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of NYC funding community- workforce development/ education/ disability

Working Conditions:

Some local travel to area funding meetings.
