Industrial and Development Engineer

Department: Sales & Marketing

Job Summary: Assist with the identification of Alphapointe’s goals to conceptualize, design, and test products in line with future products; generate and update with the assistance of QA/QC required development documentation; conduct, maintain records of, and update all time and motion studies for all labor operations; work directly with operations to develop all labor cost and equipment cost estimates for new product development projects; analyze all current equipment productivity and performance results, research and recommend changes; assure that all production and warehouse floor layouts provide optimal efficiencies; work with and cater to the safety and other needs of the company’s legally blind employees; work directly with operations and QA/QC to establish and manage all safety programs, assuring company can pass all OSHA reviews; assist in management of ISO 9001:2012 program and be willing to become certified as an internal auditor for the ISO 9001:20012 program.

Essential Functions:

  • Thoroughly understand all company safety, manufacturing, costing, material handling, and quality control policies and procedures. Recommend and implement changes as needed.
  • Ensure a safe environment for legally blind employees by determining best layout of the department and safeguarding of machines and surroundings.
  • Assure that company complies with and can pass all OSHA requirements. Recommend and implement changes as needed.
  • Assure accuracy of all labor and materials standards in company’s bills of material.
    • Conduct, maintain records of and update all time and motion studies for current product
    • Develop costing analysis and standards for new products and/or service projects working directly with the development team
  • Assure that company has accurate and up-to-date list of all capital equipment, and that location of the equipment is identified and verified
  • Work with and be sensitive to the safety and other needs of the company’s legally blind employees
  • Develop prototypes as needed for production design evaluation, production method, and certification of design before moving into production
  • Control the design and development of all products to include recommendations for change, materials used, and new product development from concept
  • Maintain the development prototyping lab to include recommendation of required machinery, maintenance scheduling, and certifications
  • Assure that production efficiency is maximized, while making needed allowances for the inherent productivity inefficiencies of most of the company’s visually impaired employees by:
    • Analyzing and recommending changes to the flow of all materials through the production process
    • Analyzing and making changes to the flow of materials in the receiving, storage and shipping processes.
  • Maintain good communications with all co-workers at all levels
  • Assist ISO 9001:2008 Management Representative in assuring understanding of and compliance with the program; and be willing and able to become certified as an internal auditor for the program.
  • Assure accurate and timely submission of all required reports to Management as directed.
  • Perform all other activities as requested by Management.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required in industrial, mechanical, manufacturing, or general engineering or industrial engineering technology.
  • Knowledge and ability to work with all Microsoft type platforms for product development, tracking, and documentation.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control and costs.
  • Understanding of U.S. patent, CE Marking and FDA applications.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in an engineering, production, or manufacturing environment.
  • At least 6 months’ experience working with the visually impaired in an industrial context, including designing products and processes for manufacturing and implementation by visually impaired employees.
  • Knowledge of Solid Works, Flow Simulation Software, and 3D Printing Software.

Working Conditions:

  • Flexible work environment including the ability to work from home environment
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time during the year
  • May sit at desk or be on feet for extended periods during the work day
  • Work with various machinery that may require ability to evaluate while working in a confined space
